Five-Dolla Leather Gloves!

I may already have two pairs of leather gloves (red & brown), BUT neither of those pairs is made for winter.

While helping Frank pick out a suit at the thrift store (he totally found a black tuxedo, a black shirt and a white tuxedo shirt for $18), I found these gorgeous, lined caramel-coloured gloves. Perfect fit!

They smelled a bit, but I sprayed them with de-odorizer/de-germifier and now, well, they still smell like old leather, but not like a thrift store. Improvement!

Also awesome? They go with my camel coat, my brown puffy coat, my leather jacket and my denim jacket. WIN x 4!

I'm a happy camper. :)

What are your latest thrift store finds?

Weekend Round-up (30.01.11)

Omgosh it's almost February. Midterms and projects are right around the corner.

But then, so is the study break...*breathe*

Here are some relaxing weekend reads to bring your blood pressure down.

How do you feel about hoodies? PJs or outfit-completing necessity? My hoodies double as aprons, so they never leave the house. Ever.

Maritime Shopaholic shares her spring fashion forecast. Drool-worthy.

Apparently a very addictive blog. Read if you have a day of laziness in front of you.

Look at this photo, and tell me your heart didn't break. Though, I do have a soft-spot for giraffes. I don't know why!

How to be brilliant.

I'm off to frolick in the snow! Enjoy your Sunday! :)

B+F+F = Penny

I bet that form of math is totally messing with your head right now.

Unless you're a girl. Then you totz know what I'm a-sayin'.

I only met Penny in September of 2009. We both moved into our residence apartment here at McGill on the same day. Literally in the same hour.

I saw her drop her panini-press-thingamajig in the parking lot and laughed.

Then she witnessed me completely misjudge the time/distance to the grocery store, which led to us wandering around in the dark for 2 hours and laughed (um...much later...)

In about a day, we were besties. In another month or so, we were soul-mates. Then sisters, then twins.

Now we're basically one person, and she moved 2 hours away to go to law school, and it feels so very wrong!

BUT she is visiting this weekend for my belated b-day celebrations. So I'm pretty happy.

We picked her up from the bus station last night and immediately went grocery-shopping at Adonis (amazing Lebanese grocery store on des Sources) for our big "Gina's b-day/Penny's here" dinner. WHAT a dinner. Lemme break it down.

Pen-Pen demonstrating the tomato-slicing skillz from her cooking class.

 YUUUM.

Spinach, chickpeas, strawberries, bean thingies, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumber, green pepper and a balsamic vinegar/olive oil/lemon juice/tamari dressing. Yum yum.

I also bought 2 lbs of fresh chicken wings at the meat counter that were marinated in some sort of wonderful Greek or Lebanese concoction. Oh my.

Oh my. They were a-mazing.

Now, I didn't expect any birthday surprises, seeing as how my birthday was 2 weeks ago and we only really had this dinner so Penny could celebrate it with me.

But it turns out, two of my roommates had sneakily found a delicious, adorable and gluten-free dessert for us at Adonis which I'd thought were cupcakes at the check-out and they had cleverly avoided my questions about the "cupcakes".

It's ice cream!!!

Pecan, French Vanilla, Pistachio, Guava, Strawberry and Mango flavours.

Oh my. We all tried every flavour and I could've eaten a pound of each. For realz.

I'm off to an Irish bar tonight for more belated celebrations with my Nutrition crew!

What to wear...

Have a great weekend everybody!

PSA #16: Be Part of Something!

This is the choir I was in last semester.
That's the conductor of the youth choir though, our conductor is the man on the right, playing the tamborine!

Due to a very complicated rearranging of the conductors, half of the adults (white-shirted humans) in this photo are now in a separate choir led by the same tamborine-wielding conductor.

I must say, choir night was and is the highlight of my week.

We all have the daily obligations of either school or work (perhaps even both!), but how many of us take time to hang out with people who share similar interests, who we wouldn't otherwise have met?

I have found that when you are around work friends or school friends, even while avoiding the topic, they still remind you of school or work (and perhaps assignments you're avoiding). Guilt is sure to follow.

When you are involved in something completely different, there is a special time in your week alotted to being completely free of these thoughts. You're able to focus on something else, like forming wonderful friendships with unlikely people.

I love choir. Not because I think I'm some kind of singing prodigy, but because I love the feeling that comes with making music with a group of people. Even HORRIBLE music! That just leads to teasing and jokes and eventually, tears of laughter. Every week. Without fail.
(Alto sections, I've found, are the best to be part of. We are vulgar and sarcastic and mildly self-deprecating. I laugh a lot in rehearsals.)

So if you're feeling weighed down by the monotony of school/work, join a club of some sort! Go curling, play bridge, join an orchestra!

It's good for your soul, and blood pressure too.

Jumping the gun...

It's -5C today!

Of course that means it's totally reasonable to take photos outside.

Oh um. Maybe not. Maybe it's just.a bit.nippy out here....

TAKE THE PHOTO ALREADY!

My poor roommate. He's so patient.

Especially because once inside I'd spot an atrocity in the photo and we'd have to venture out the door again.

I did bake brownies the other day, and he DID get some. So...that's fair. Right?

Sweater: RW&Co; striped tee: Mango; scarf: LeChateau; Jeans: Jacob (thrifted); Boots: Browns; Belt: Gap

PS this is what happens when you take a snowy photo with the close-up "food" setting on.

NEAT huh?!
I thought so..

Vote for my muffins! It's the right thing to do.

I got an email yesterday thanking me for entering my muffin recipe in a contest and that I could disperse a link so that my pals could vote for me.

How sweet!

Anyhoo, if you feeling like throwing a vote my way, you can follow this link, and hit reply to comment on the recipe. You may have to become a member to do so...but you can just unsubscribe later. :P

The recipe is for my pomegranate-almond muffins. Did you make them? If you haven't made them yet, you really should. They're healthy AND pretty!

 Pomegranate-Almond Muffins

I would make some right now, but I already made muffins this weekend!

They're fieldberry teff muffins. They need sugar. I don't know why they need sugar, but they really do, so I'll post the recipe when they taste better. Because I like ya, and that's how I roll.

Um... Brr.

Only one photo today. You know why?

It's flippin' cold out here! It's -20C plus a windchill around here this week. Which means...super bundling. This is before I put on armwarmers, a jacket, then a down-feather coat, then another scarf and then two pairs of mittens.

jk. I only wore one pair.

Boots: Browns; Jeans: Gap (thrifted); pink tee: Jacob; cardigan: Dynamite; scarf: gift from mama

However, with all that, I forgot to put on a necklace. Agh! My neck looks so bare.

Doesn't it look like I'm frolicking in the wilderness?

It's an illusion! That's outside our back door, where we keep the garbage...

mm. exotic.

Keep warm, lovely readers!

Awesome Lazy Animals

I like seeing animals being lazy and dozey.

It makes me more convinced that it is acceptable.

Mother Nature wants it this way. If she wanted us to be super-efficient workaholics, we would have evolved to enjoy that.

Instead, she made it so super-efficient workaholics get hypertension and stomach ulcers.

What a lady.

So behold! Animals that look like I did this weekend:

omgosh. I want those ears for pillows. Preferably with the dog still attached.

 Agh! This guy's my favourite.

No, he's my favourite. Is he watching the clouds? I hope so.

 Totz adorbz.

 hehe. hoho. ha.

Never feel bad about being lazy. It's obviously meant to be.

Weekend Round-Up (23.01.11)

 Amen.

Holy smokes. Three weeks into the winter semester and this house is a sleepy one. There was a massive house-crawl in town on Friday night and all of us said "uuuuum. nah." and went to bed before midnight.

Saturday started out productive, as I finished my assigned book readings. But then Frank and I both decided to download video games on our computers...and then we realized it was 7pm and dark outside. How'd that happen? We did manage to go to the thrift shop in town though and get him a black suit, and two dress shirts for $18.

Say whaa?

I know. It was the luckiest day for Frankie! I also found myself wonderfully worn-in caramel-coloured leather driving gloves for $5. Even though I don't drive. Someday I might?

So I apologize if this Sunday's round-up is less than inspired. My brain is basically in a coma.

~ Sally from Already Pretty has a giveaway happening for a $250 Jones NY gift card. If you're a US resident, make sure to enter before midnight tonight!

~ Three creative ways to display jewelry! One. Two. Three. Hm...really puts my method to shame. My method being to lay them wherever I take them off and forget the next time I need it.

~ Trying to figure out how to shop on the cheap? Madeline from Utah writes a fantastic blog, Über Chic for Cheap, featuring outfits that can be recreated on a budget.

~ Want to make your own sugar scrub? Heeeeeere's how! Nifty, eh?

~ Are any of you huge fans of the wardrobe Jayma Mays wears on Glee? Here is a helpful and hilarious blog dedicated to helping you recreate it! I must admit, I am smitten with most of her necklaces/clips/sweaters.

That is all! I must go now, as Frank has decided to bake us some spicy french fries if I repaid him 1 potato. Obviously...I accepted.

Have a lovely week! xoxo

I think my grandpa had these pants.

Army-green trousers with a firm crease down the front of each pant-leg AND a waist nearly at my belly-button. Sure sounds like his pants.

Except his were perfectly tailored and I desperately need to hem mine.  They're 3 inches too long.

Pants: Mango; tunic: RW&Co, belt: RW&Co; scarf: gift; flats: Aldo

If I look a little disheveled...it's because I am. A lot disheveled. I'd just walked in the door after my classes had wrapped for the day, and I said to my roommate Frank "You need to take a photo of me before I get into my jimjams!" and he said "ok, let's use David's camera!"

David's camera makes me swoon. It is the kind of camera I want. Pronto. He found it on eBay...lucky duck. Anyway, I love the photos it takes. So clean! Sigh.

I'm lucky to have such a non-judgemental friend/roommate. Who else would take photos of your outfits without calling you vain, or teasing you about having such a silly hobby? I'm beyond grateful.

He actually gets into it, and tells me how to stand and whether or not I look stupid.

I should bake him a cake.

Bon weekend folks!

PSA #15: Home-cookin' is the best cookin'

Heeeya good lookin', whaaaaatcha got cookin'? Howsabout cookin' somethin' u-up with meeeeeeeee?

(I seem to be channeling my papa lately.)

(If I ever promise not to quote Hank Williams anymore, it's a lie. Don't believe it for a second.)

How many of you eat home-cooked meals every night? How often do you eat out? What kind of food do you order when you get take-out? No pressure! I'm just curious.

This isn't just the Dietician-to-be speaking/typing, actually most of what I am about to tell you is common sense or from personal experience.

But yeah, some will be from my book-learnin'.

Some Benefits of Cooking at Home:

1. It's cheaper! Truly. I promise. Pinky swear. It is so much cheaper. Especially if you track down the grocery store near you that sells veggies/fruit/etc. at a lower cost-per-weight than the others. Take a lesson from my coupon-lovin' grandma and scope out the deals. Totally worth it.

2. Leftovers! You tell yourself that that pizza will last you a few days. It won't. You'll see it at breakfast and say "mmmm. cold pizza." Then you'll come home at lunch and see it again and say "ooo. Reheated pizza." THEN you'll come home for supper at see it and say "I don't wanna cook....pizza it is."

Or if you're like me, the pizza was gone an hour after it arrived at the door.

When you make a pot of spaghetti sauce, or a cheesy tuna casserole, or shepherd's pie, it will usually last quite a while. These aren't really things you'll want to eat at every meal. And if you make a LOT and freeze portions of it, you'll be soooo happy one day when there's "nothing to eat". Bam. Chicken pot pie. Mmmm.

3. Ingredient awareness. Ok, this is the preachy part. I'm not gonna say that you shouldn't eat things you can't pronounce. That's dumb. There are plenty of really awesome anti-oxidants, essential nutrients and such that only people who study them can say (properly). BUT meals that you order in, or buy pre-packaged from the store DO contain more fat, salt and sugar than would be present in the exact same meal that you make at home. We are hard-wired to crave these things because they were super beneficial to our Cro-Magnon ancestors. Buuuut, not so much anymore since we get far too much of them on a regular basis.

4. Experimentation! The kind you can continue after college! Hardy-har. :)

So, maybe you've been making that casserole with regular old cheddar and some salt for flavour all these years? If you want, you can add some broccoli, or switch to havarti, or instead of salt, try a mix of herbs. Throw in some hot chili sauce! I swear, I put it on everything now. When you buy meals from the store, or order them, you can't normally make these kinds of changes. You can super-size it (sigh...) or change the toppings on your pizza, but you really don't get the same thrill as when you change up an old recipe and find out it's a MILLION TIMES BETTER!

Really, how did I not know about chili sauce before? I might have a problem.

5. Team effort, y'all. Cooking alone is cool. It's relaxing, it's fun, sure. Maybe have a glass of wine, and it's even better!

But...cooking with family/roommates/significant other? Sooo much more fun. As I said above, little changes can sometimes make a huge difference. So what if you never heard of endives? Maybe your pal throws some into the mix, you're not too sure about it. It ends up being awesome. Catch my drift?

I'm not saying you have to try endives. I'm still pretty confused as to what they are. I'm just saying that increasing the number of cooks in the kitchen, also increases the total creativity level present in said kitchen. Of course, you don't want to reach that critical level of "too many cooks", so...be aware.

6. Portion sizes. I learned some pretty horrifying things today in one of my nutrition classes. I won't get into the details, but basically, a lot of people don't know what a serving size is. A whole pizza...is not a serving. A large pizza is not an adult serving, and a small pizza is not a child serving. FYI. So get out your trusty Canada's Food Guide, or your fancy Food Pyramid if you're in the US (there are food guides in many countries) and reaaaallly take it in. Drop a little knowledge on your bad self and see if you end up learning a thing or two! If you do, please tell me. It would make me sooooooooooooooo happy.

(I'm also available for clarification/questions/concerns/qualms).

Finally, it's a stress-reliever. I have no scientific proof for that statement, but have you ever just...stirred something? Not while multi-tasking, except maybe talking to your fellow chef(s), but just focusing entirely on stirring that sauce/roux/soup/etc. It's calming. Try it.

Put down the take-out menu, remove the phone from your ear, and slowly...walk...into...the kitchen...and throw some food around. Chop, sautée, julienne, deep-fry (or not), slow-roast!

Seriously, your belly will ADORE YOU.

Hallelujah. Food is good.

A Lesson in Patience...

I am patient and I am not patient.

If you sit me down with a specific task that would make anyone else stab themself in the eye after 5 minutes, I will probably enjoy it.

One time my mother asked me to remove the price tags from ~100 dollar store craft items for my little brother's birthday. I sat on the floor and picked away at them for hours. Didn't mind a bit.

BUT, when it comes to waiting, I am horribly impatient.

Example. You know how I've been complaining about my camera? It's not my camera. It's me.

I don't wait long enough for it to focus before I start the timer. I found this out today.

Case in point: Two photos, same lighting, 10 seconds apart.

 What a difference!

So apparently point-and-shoot cameras (or at least mine), need some TLC. They need time to get their s*** together before you go trying to take clear, crisp photos. I understand now. That weird clicking sound that I've been ignoring as I press the button is my camera trying to say "waaaiiiittt!!!"

After I figured this out, I took more photos, waiting and not waiting (because I'm a true scientist), and it's true. When I waited, I got clear pictures. It adjusted to the lighting better, it focused more, and was overall a happier camera.

Jeans: Gap (thrifted); plaid shirt: random street sale; belt: Gap; necklace: RW&Co

I am now a much happier, more centred person/photographer.

Spicy High-Protein Stir-Fry

I know it's wrong, but I usually don't eat anything between breakfast and 3 or 4pm.

I either forget to make something, I don't have time to make something, or I'm busy and I forget. It happens.

So yesterday, I came home at 3pm. My tummy was a-rumblin', and so I decided to make a stir-fry. And I had to add a bunch of protein to fill me up, since I was about to head downtown and well...limited meal options. I wasn't sure when I'd be eating next.

So here you go. It's healthy, it's spicy, it's a lotta food.

Enjoy.

1 medium carrot, julienned
1/2 c. broccoli, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
100 g firm tofu, cubed - protein!
1/2 c. bean sprouts - protein!
1 c. thick vermicelli (rice) noodles
tamari
hot chili sauce
tabasco
canola oil (1 Tbsp)

Heat oil, then throw in carrots, celery and tofu. Let those cook for a while (sprinkle on some chili sauce), then add the bean sprouts, broccoli and more chili sauce, plus tamari and tabasco.

Take the cooked noodles (they only take a minute or two to cook in boiling water), and stir them into the veggies, add more tamari. Serve!

IT'S SO EASY. You have no excuse.

:)

Return of the Denim Tunic

DUN DUN DUNNNN.

Actually...it's a joyous occasion!

Did I tell you I lost my glorious denim tunic? Well I did. Sometime in late November.

I didn't even realize it for 3 weeks. I thought it was in the laundry hamper...

Yep, 3 weeks without laundry. It was exam-time!

Anyway, I used a birthday coupon to begrudgingly buy it AGAIN. I wasn't pleased with having to do that...but now that it's back in my closet...I'm pretty darn happy.

Plus, I got a sweet new belt from the Gap for $7 that looks quite dandy with it!

My chi is once again balanced.

Stay tuned for more birthday purchases! I'm actually returning one pair of pants tomorrow, the brown ones. I just can't stand bagginess anymore! Once you find skinny jeans you like...there's just no going back.

The green pants are staying, and being hemmed. Just in case you were worried.

Which you probably weren't.

Happy Tuesday folks!

Birthday Shopping

It is amazing how many sales there are in January.

Amazing and disturbing. How am I supposed to stay away? They are clever.

I went shopping this weekend, to use up some birthday coupons.

I ended up with new sunglasses and a replacement denim tunic exactly like the one I lost, two pairs of pants...as in...not jeans (say whaaa?), a t-shirt, a cardigan, and a skinny belt!

And I barely spent anything. Hurray for gift cards.

Here is my outfit today, with a few of my new items. Including army-green pants.

I can tell you exactly the last time I owned green pants. I was 18. They were forest green cords. I'm not proud. But these are grown-up pants. They have a fancy crease. That is all.

(I apologize for the hair/lack of overall kemptness. It was not an easy morning.)

Shirt: Mango; Pants: Mango; scarf: gift; flats: Aldo

Also, I am really unhappy with the quality of photos I take in this house. It's the weird fluorescent lighting, the layout, the awkwardness...it's all frustrating. And it's too darn cold to take outdoor photos right now. Ugh.

Weekend Round-up (15.01.11)

Is anyone else feeling like a million pounds of sleepy reptile today?

No? Just me? Hm.

I may still be recovering from my birthday festivities...after which I got ~3 hrs of sleep before getting up for an 8:30am class on Friday.

As I type this, my eyes are only tiny slits. The room is dark. My head keeps falling to one side.

BUT I very much wanted to share some interesting reads of the past week, so here you go.

Casey, from Casey's Elegant Musings, has started a swing dress sew-along! It's still in the beginning stages and it sounds great, so join in if it pleases ya!

Sarah Von shares some of Ghandi's wisdom

Shabby Apple features some ADORABLE (possibly Canadian?) winter boots. Oh, my heart.

Chelsea, a fellow Maritimer and fashion blogger, shows off her impressive and adorable shoe collection. I wonder if we have the same shoe size....

Have you read Hyperbole and a Half? It is a hilarious blog. I read the latest post over Christmas, and my parents were concerned. Your laughter will be maniacal and lasting. Just warning you.

Lastly, I am a huge fan of The Pioneer Woman. Her blog makes me laugh every single day. Here is a recipe from this week. Beef stew with beer and paprika. Just the thought of it makes my body warm up from the inside out. Om nom nom.

Have a great week folks!

Birthday Suit

And by suit I mean dress.

And not just any dress. My favourite dress.

At least...my favourite fancy dress.

Ok. It's my only fancy dress.

It's still my favourite one.

Hair and make-up was beautifully done by my good pal Megan. I was sooo impressed. Because I have no idea how to tease hair. Or make that weird twisty thing happen in the back. Or make a smoky eye. Basically, I'm useless on my own.

So here are my favourite shots (as in, photographs) from last night!

I wonder if she's for hire?

Dress: RW&Co; Shoes: Winners; Belt: Unknown shop; Necklace: RW&Co.

Two very lovely friends of mine. One is the bar manager!
I know right? How convenient...
I swear we were friends before he was manager. :P

You can't tell, but this was a REALLY ugly wig.
I mistakenly put it on the incorrect (and much more appealing) way.
I kinda like it!

We were drumming to a song. Very enthusiastically.
Then I couldn't keep from laughing, and Frank got lost in the music.
This is why we're friends. And roommates.
There's too much fun to be had.

It was a great time. 24 feels good. :)

Here are some ideas for your big day:
